LIVE First reports of Kurt Cobain found dead

Charles R. Cross, a Seattle music journalist who edited the city's leading alternative weekly, the Rocket, and wrote best-selling books on Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and other rock greats, died Friday at age 67.

"We are saddened to hear of the passing of Charles Cross," the writer's family said in a statement. "He passed away peacefully from natural causes in his sleep on August 9, 2024. We are all grieving and trying to navigate this difficult process of navigating the next steps."

Among Cross' mourners was veteran rock critic and Los Angeles Times biographer Robert Hilburn, who wrote on the X platform that Cross' acclaimed book, "Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain," was "high on my short list of the best music biographies ever." Hilburn said, "He was as warm and friendly as he was a passionate and compelling writer."
