Both the Chrome and Firefox web browsers are just a few version updates away from version 100. There are concerns that the third digit could make some websites unusable.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox are about to take down a number of websites.

Developers and engineers from both Google and Mozilla have released a report explaining why they're a little nervous about their respective browser versions approaching triple-digit numbers. With Chrome scheduled for public release in late March and Firefox scheduled for release in early May, there's not much time to prepare. Although, to be fair, the potential issue wasn't exactly a surprise.

These concerns stem from a problem similar to the Y2K bug of 20+ years ago: programs don’t account for larger numbers. In this case, some websites are specifically set up to check for browser version numbers, but may not be able to track anything above 99.

According to the report, a similar problem occurred about a decade ago when browsers first went to double digits. The belief is that because changes had to be made to account for the extra digit, some companies were thinking ahead to triple digits (or more). And that claim carries some weight, as various tests have shown that some systems accept the change without any problems, while others have had some issues.
