Over time, Microsoft Access databases grow larger and use unnecessary disk space. Therefore, it is a good idea to run the Compact and Repair Database tool periodically to ensure the consistency of your data. Here's how to do this with Access for Microsoft 365, Access 2019, Access 2016, Access 2013, and Access 2010.
How to Compact and Repair a Database in Microsoft Access
Before you begin, make sure you have a current database backup. Compact and repair is a very intrusive database operation and can cause database failure. The backup is instrumental when this happens.
If the database is in a shared folder, instruct other users to close the database before proceeding. To run the tool, you must be the only user with the database open.
If a database is open in the Access window, select File and then choose Close.
