Both your Mac and Windows PC should have the same workgroup name to make file sharing as easy as possible. A workgroup is part of Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), a method Microsoft uses to allow computers on the same local network to share resources.

Fortunately, Apple has built support for WINS into OS X and macOS, so we only need to confirm a few settings or make any changes necessary to ensure the two systems recognize each other on the network.

This guide will show you how to set workgroup names on both your Mac and PC. While the steps outlined are specific to OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 8, the process is similar for most versions of the Mac operating system, with only a few minor changes to the item names here and there. The same goes for Windows, with the basic concept remaining the same from version to version.

Apple sets the default workgroup name on Macs to WORKGROUP, which is the same default workgroup name that Microsoft sets in Windows. If you've never made changes to your Mac or PC's default network settings, you can skip this step, but we recommend following it to confirm that everything is configured correctly.
