A CrowdStrike security update for Windows has caused massive outages and system failures worldwide.
Bad code just crashed a billion Windows machines
The update, which went out in the early hours of Friday morning, appears to be disrupting cloud service for Windows hosts, taking down systems that control everything from airlines to emergency services and more. CrowdStrike reportedly released a fix for the issue around 9 a.m. ET, but outages are still occurring.
Among the services affected are airlines: one article claims that nearly 1,400 flights have been canceled due to the problem. Meanwhile, emergency services in some states are experiencing problems, and even businesses are experiencing the BSOD (blue screen of death) that appears to be a result of the outage.
CrowdStrike CEO Gearoge Kurtz pushed out an update to the X, which users quickly criticized for not apologizing. If the update is to be believed, the fix has been made, it’s just a matter of companies dealing with the fallout. How long that might take is unknown at this time.
