CS2 cheaters now use AI to impersonate real players

It seems like cheaters are developing new ways to appear legitimate with each passing day. This time, cheaters have figured out how to use generative AI to imitate real players in CS2. Even Valve’s flagship shooter isn’t safe from man-made horrors.

This is AI cheating

The exploit appears to have been in the game for a while, but it did gain traction in a Reddit thread from April 24th that showed an AI talking to other players in chat. The AI, likely a large language model (LLM) similar to ChatGPT, even spoke in slang to appear more authentic. However, players quickly caught on and asked the AI to create a Python script, which it did. From the context of the video, it’s difficult to tell whether the player was real and had the AI respond instead, or if the cheater was a bot account.

Players reacted as you might imagine. Some were shocked, some were awed, and still others worried that video games were about to be invaded by massive armies of bots and LLMs. “This game is fucked ngl there has to be a good fucking plan,” wrote one disgruntled player. “Valve please wake the fuck up,” said another. There have been rumors recently about cheaters using AI to create cheats (thanks BO3) that are nearly undetectable because they wouldn’t read into your computer’s memory or execute like a traditional software cheat. If those cheats evolve significantly, combined with AI language bots like the one in the video above, we could be in for a terrible future.

Bots have been a problem for Valve for a long time, starting with Team Fortress 2 being unplayable for a while. CS2 even has its own issues with bot armies invading Casual lobbies. Valve hasn’t yet commented on the general cheating problem that has plagued CS2, but hopefully they have a solution for the AI bots in store as well.
