With the professional scene on hold for the season break, Counter-Strike 2 players are once again directing their anger at the state of the game. Some reported a significant drop in performance and FPS this week due to poorly thrown Molotov bullets.

A CS2 player demonstrated the emerging Molotov bug in a June 23 post on the game’s /r/GlobalOffensive subreddit. While practicing with friends in a lobby, u/Pangolin-Individual demonstrated how much their game’s performance was affected by throwing a Molotov and detonating it in the air instead of letting it land on the ground. An airborne Molotov has no effect on game state; the grenade must land on a flat surface to spread its flames, but a glance at the FPS counter reveals a massive drop of over 200 frames.
Many others (myself included) echoed this theory as well, and the performance impact isn’t limited to Dust 2—although I noticed less of a drop when exploding the Molotov indoors than in direct sunlight outside. “Holy shit… just tried it—250 FPS down to 90. This game needs a massive performance update,” one player said.
Counter-Strike players are now even considering forming new strategies based on deliberately mis-throwing their Molotovs in order to affect a defender’s performance before they hit. Others are deciding that it might be best to steer clear of Molotovs to avoid the FPS drop you would with a flash grenade. “This could actually be a way to sneak an area if it’s a rendering issue so you can tease it as a flash,” someone suggested in the same thread.
