Tasty Magic: The Gathering mechanics spice up this summer's Universes Beyond set, Assassin's Creed, with Disguise, Cloak, and Historic.
Assassin's Creed Lore for MTG Players | Universes Beyond ep. 2
Wizards of the Coast released official MTG Assassin's Creed spoilers on June 18, revealing three returning mechanics to accompany the new Freerunning ability in the Magic set. Disguise, introduced earlier this year via Murders at Karlov Manor, returns for the new Universes Beyond set, along with Cloak and Historic.
Both Disguise and Cloak are similar and are flavorful additions to the Assassin's Creed MTG set. The Cloak mechanic, like Disguise, was also introduced via MKM as an evolved version of an older mechanic called Manifest. Both Disguise and Cloak allow a card to enter the battlefield face-down without opponents knowing the identity of the Magic card. When played this way, the card is a Colorless 2/2 with Ward Two and no mana cost.
What makes these two mechanics so flavorful within the MTG Assassin's Creed set is that you can flip a card with Disguise or Cloak on it by paying its cost when you have priority and your opponent can't interact with the move, giving you an assassin-like advantage. The key difference between Cloak and Disguise is that Disguise cards have a specific cost that is separate from the card's mana cost, whereas a Cloaked creature card is flipped by paying its mana cost.
