The new game Cyberpunk 2077 is a nostalgic game with a nod to the 80s. The game looks back at the science fiction movement and the fashion of that time.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the future, but takes inspiration from the 1982 film Blade Runner and the manga and anime series Ghost in the Shell, which began in 1989. The game's colors and fashions may make those old enough to remember the '80s a little nostalgic. One designer is even releasing a line of Cyberpunk-influenced, all-black clothing and accessories that retain the aesthetic.
"It's only a matter of time before the game's influence is prominent enough to see," marketing consultant Tenin Terrell said in an email interview. "The development team has likely tapped into the futuristic '80s aesthetic of Cyberpunk from Japanese vaporwave or future funk styles popularized in anime, comics, and other graphic art media distributed by the country's creators."
Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing game set in Night City, an open world in the Cyberpunk universe. Players take on the first-person perspective of a customizable mercenary named V, who can gain skills in hacking and machination, with options for melee and ranged combat.
