There will be no zombie-style resurrection: On Friday, Days Gone game director Jeff Ross revealed that there would never be a sequel because publisher Sony were never really "fans" of the franchise.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Ross explained that canceling Days Gone was a "purely portfolio-based" decision. With the success of The Last of Us, a legendary zombie-themed hit, Sony felt that another game in the same genre was redundant. "They already had a zombie game, so why would they need the underperforming title?" he further explained.

Days Gone first launched exclusively on PlayStation in 2019, and was ported to PC in 2021. It was met with mixed reception. Some appreciated its unique approach, with the biker character deviating from the typical zombie survival game protagonist, but many found the gameplay and story lacking. This mixed reaction likely also played into Sony’s decision to cancel the sequel, despite the many narrative questions left unanswered in the original. “We were just scratching the surface,” Ross said of the storyline.

The game director also discussed sales figures, claiming that Days Gone had sold eight million copies on PlayStation 4 as of January 6, 2022, and that another million copies were sold on Steam after the PC port.
