Dead by Daylight has added many items, add-ons, and perks to the game. But players have found none to be as useless as the infamous Broken Key. Since launch, players have believed the item has remained a useless shell, with some calling it "a slap in the face."
Dead By Daylight: The Useless Survivor
Players weighed in on the Broken Key in an April 17 Reddit thread devoted exclusively to discussing its uselessness. "In 2016, this was the most useless item in the game. Nothing has changed since," the original post reads. One player said that finding the item in chests feels like a "slap in the face" and "I'd rather lose a health stat and find literally anything but that key." For the uninitiated, the Broken Key requires add-ons to function properly, and finding them scattered around the map grants you precisely zero useful mechanics.
The Broken Key is meant to reveal different auras to the survivor who equips it, but there's a catch. As stated above, the item requires add-ons to function and will reveal auras based on the add-ons it has. It's the only item in Dead by Daylight that can't function on its own, making it useless in most scenarios.
"No item should need add-ons to be useful. They need to change this item," one player replied to the thread. Another suggested that the Broken Key should have a basic functionality of revealing the auras of nearby survivors, with add-ons improving or expanding the aura-revealing mechanics.
