Destiny 2 The Final Shape had an alternate ending before Bungie delayed it until June 2024—and the reveal proves Bungie did the right thing by taking its time working on the expansion. Spoilers follow, of course.

Destiny Bulletin has posted the pre-delay version of Destiny 2 The Final Shape ending movie, which was revealed by Bungie on June 18. The movie is an alternate version of the cutscene in which Cayde-6 sacrifices himself to bring back our Ghost after defeating The Witness. There is no Cayde-6 in the original movie, and the Guardian resurrects the Ghost by seemingly combining the powers of Light and Darkness.

While this ending is interesting in its own right and contains intriguing details, such as the texture of the Darkness wielded by the Guardian, many players agreed that Bungie "dodged a bullet" by not including it in the expansion.

“Thankfully there was a delay, this honestly would have been a horrible ending that would have negated the impact of all the other deaths that have ever happened,” one player wrote in a Reddit thread on June 19. Considering we’ve seen multiple Ghosts die in Destiny’s story, including Targe in this expansion, it would have had major implications for the story if we had brought back our own Ghosts just because we could.
