After laying off 17 percent of Bungie's staff yesterday, the future of the Destiny franchise is now more uncertain than ever, sources say.

On the August 1 episode of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb reported that development on the next Destiny project, codenamed "Payback," has been halted. He said that "Payload [later clarified as Payback], the 'next Destiny,' is being delayed indefinitely."
He clarified that Bungie doesn't consider Payback to be Destiny 3, but rather a side project within the universe. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said something similar, confirming that Destiny 3 wasn't canceled in response to social media rumors following Grubb's comments.
"To dispel some rumors, Destiny 3 wasn't canceled because it was never in development, according to people familiar with it," Schreier said. "Bungie did work on a spinoff project called 'Payback' very early on, but they canceled that a while ago."
