When a car audio amplifier fuse blows, the first step to unraveling the problem is figuring out which fuse is blowing. There are two or three different types of car amplifier fuses in a typical installation, so finding the root cause in a given situation depends on figuring out which fuse has blown and then narrowing down the possibilities of the cause.

In cases where a power cord connects the amp directly to the battery and it is connected correctly, there is an inline fuse that can blow in addition to the internal amp fuse. In other installations, the power is drawn from a distribution block with its own fuse. So, depending on how an amp is connected to the electrical system, you may be dealing with different fuses.

Anyway, the main reasons for an amp fuse to blow are a short to ground somewhere along the power line and internal amplifier faults. To find the exact source of the problem, you will need to get a voltmeter out.
