Why does it seem like every week we’re met with a request to ignore the latest TikTok cleaning trick because it’s dangerous, flawed, or useless? Well, probably because we are, and this week is no different: There’s a hack going around advising people to tackle their tile grout with toilet bowl cleaner and, honestly, you shouldn’t do it. Here’s the bad “hack” — and what to do instead.
Awesome DIY Cleaner! How to Clean Grout in 1 Minute
The tip is pretty simple this time: you should use toilet bowl cleaner to scrub the grout on your tile floors and walls. It will definitely work, and it feels like it makes sense. Ceramic and tile can’t be damaged by cleaners designed for ceramic toilets, right? Well, as a local news station in Illinois points out, the chemicals can also break down the caulk on the tile and damage the grout itself, ultimately doing more harm to your floor and walls than it helps.
Luckily, dirty grout is a long way older than TikTok and trendy, viral hacks, so there are plenty of existing methods for cleaning it. In the past, we’ve recommended mixing two parts baking soda with one part hydrogen peroxide, applying the resulting paste to your dirty grout lines, letting it sit for a few minutes, then scrubbing it with a cleaning toothbrush. Once you’ve scrubbed away the stain, use a wet cloth to wipe the mixture away.
If you have mold on your grout, mix one part bleach with ten parts water and put it in a spray bottle. After brushing or vacuuming the dirt from the area, soak the moldy grout in the spray and let it sit for five minutes before attacking it with a sponge or cleaning toothbrush. Rinse, wipe it down with a clean cloth and you’re done.
