This article explains what an ECM file is and how to open or convert it on your computer.
What is an ECM file and how do I open it?
A file with the ECM file extension is a disk image, sometimes also called an Error Code Modeler file. They store content without Error Correction Codes (ECC) or Error Detecting Codes (EDC).
Doing away with ECC and EDC can save download time and bandwidth, as the resulting file size is smaller. The point is to then compress the file using a general compressor, such as RAR, or another compression algorithm, to reduce the file size even further (they might then be called something like file.ecm.rar).
Like ISO, ECM files contain other information in an archive format, usually to store files such as BIN, CDI, NRG, etc. They are often used to contain compressed versions of video game CD images.
