When you insert a picture into a Microsoft Word document, you can adjust its size and position to customize the document layout and choose how the text around the picture appears, such as to make it flow seamlessly around the photo. A picture with a large file size can be compressed so that the document can be quickly downloaded from a web page or made suitable for an email attachment. And for images that need more explanation, add a caption.

The easiest way to insert a picture is to drag the photo from Windows Explorer into the Word document. However, if you want more control over the placement of the picture, use the Insert menu in Word.

Place the cursor where you want the image to appear.

Go to the Insert tab and select Pictures. In Word 2010, select Picture. In Word Online, select Picture or Online Pictures.
