Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is the final game from Suikoden series creator Yoshitaka Murayama, who sadly passed away in early 2024. It has the classic JRPG look and feel you'd expect, but can it live up to the expectations of the highest-funded Kickstarter video game of 2020?
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes – Rating 100%
Anyone familiar with classic JRPG gameplay will feel right at home with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. The game is paced nicely, starting off with classic JPRG turn-based combat and team-building, but quickly opening up to more freeform exploration and later town-building and light resource management. Mini-games have you solving puzzles, fighting in chess-like sieges, and more that I won’t spoil. The town grows as you find characters to open shops and facilities. Inventory space is limited, but the changing of equipment and runes is slick and cleverly designed, and overall the flow of the game is very satisfying.
What I found incredibly frustrating was the complete lack of mouse support and keyboard remapping options. Nothing breaks the immersion more than having familiar buttons pressed with no effect, and while it’s certainly not a game-breaker and is solely a PC issue, this lack of choice feels completely out of place in a modern game. Likewise, you’re limited to set save points. They’re usually well placed, but not always, and again, it feels unnecessarily outdated.
