On consoles, Elden Ring’s core performance issues are still readily apparent across a variety of technical aspects following Shadow of the Erdtree’s release—particularly when compared closely to it by Digital Foundry on YouTube. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions suffer from persistent FPS drops below 60, most noticeable during intense segments of gameplay. These inconsistencies are further compounded by traversal stutters, disrupting the seamless experience Elden Ring players have come to expect.
Elden Ring has been plagued by significant performance issues across all platforms since its original launch, and continues to this day. On PlayStation 5, the game frequently drops below its targeted 60 FPS, with VRR doing little to mitigate the issue. Quality of life and ray tracing modes fare worse, often struggling to maintain 30-40 FPS. The Xbox Series X exhibits these issues, lagging slightly behind the PS5 despite its VRR implementation. The Xbox Series S is the weakest performer, with framerates fluctuating wildly.
Elden Ring on PC perhaps has its biggest issues with inconsistent frame rates, leading to noticeable stuttering, particularly during traversal. The game’s lack of support for ultrawide aspect ratios and higher frame rate caps, and the fact that the game is stuck at 60 FPS without mods only exacerbates these issues. Even on high-end hardware, achieving silky-smooth performance is a challenge, with enabling ray tracing degrading performance, placing a significant load on both the CPU and GPU, and leading to severe stuttering.
