According to experts, using email aliases can provide an additional layer of security, but they are not a complete solution for protecting your online data.
STOP giving out your real email address (do this instead)
As more email alias services emerge, it’s essential to understand exactly what they offer. Like Firefox Relay’s new Premium plan, paid options may be fine for many, while free varieties like Apple’s built-in Hide My Email feature may work for others.
If you’re going to use an email alias service, experts say you shouldn’t treat it as a complete security solution. They warn that you should still be careful about which emails you open and which links you click within them.
“These services work by creating aliases for your actual email address, which forward your email without exposing your actual email address. This adds an extra layer of privacy to protect half of your account information: the email address itself,” Nate Warfield, an ethical hacker and CTO of cybersecurity firm Prevailion, explained in an email.
