According to experts, a recent move by European regulators against Apple could eventually lead to more payment options for users.
Apple Pay – How it Works and 1 Tip Everyone Should Use
EU antitrust regulators are reportedly charging Apple with anti-competitive practices over Apple Pay and the NFC chip in iPhones that enables tap-and-go payments. The company is said to be refusing to grant rivals access to the payment system.
“If we enable access to the NFC functionality through an open API, third-party payment services could have the same or similar functionality as Apple Pay, without direct control or fees imposed by Apple,” Sean O’Brien, a visiting professor at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School, told Lifewire in an email interview.
Competition authorities are now specifically targeting the technology, which enables tap-to-pay on Apple devices, as part of a broader investigation into the company's practices.
