If Apple releases a newer version of the original, larger HomePod next year, experts fear it could suffer from the same Siri issues as the first time around.

Recent rumors have suggested that Apple is readying a new, full-size HomePod for release in early 2023, with an updated version of the HomePod mini also expected. But the return of the larger HomePod has generated controversy due to the original’s excellent sound quality. A refresh would likely build on that, but some experts are already concerned that the speaker’s Achilles heel will be a lackluster Siri, a smart assistant notoriously unstable and unable to do what it’s asked.
"I'm definitely concerned that Siri could fail," Apple journalist Connor Jewiss told Lifewire via direct message. "To me, Siri is one of the biggest, most misbehaving features."
The original HomePod, first released in February 2018, was well-received for its excellent sound quality. Combining the two in a stereo pair improved matters considerably, creating a soundstage that had only one problem: a hefty $349 asking price. Apple eventually corrected course by releasing the HomePod mini for $99, but it’s much smaller and therefore can’t compete with the rich, full sound of the larger HomePod. The original HomePod remains highly sought after by audiophiles, despite being discontinued in 2021. Interestingly, the price of used HomePods skyrocketed as soon as the smart speaker was discontinued, suggesting there was still demand, but not at the price Apple was asking. Only when it was too late to even buy one.
