Facebook is confident that its machine learning model can combat deepfakes, but experts say machine learning alone cannot protect us from deepfakes.

Companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Google are all working to combat deepfakes that are spreading across the web and social networks. While the methods vary, there is one potential fool-proof method to spot these fake videos: blockchains.

“[Blockchains] just give you a lot of potential to validate deepfakes in a way that is the best form of validation that I can see,” Stephen Wolfram, founder and CEO of Wolfram Research and author of A New Kind of Science, told Lifewire over the phone.

Deepfake technology has grown rapidly in recent years. The deceptive videos use machine learning methods to do things like superimpose a person’s face onto another person’s body, alter background conditions, fake lip-sync, and more. They range from harmless parodies to having celebrities or public figures say or do something they haven’t done.
