Check Point Research recently announced that it has found a security hole in Qualcomm’s MSM modem chip software that can be exploited by some malicious apps. According to researchers, the vulnerability is present in about 40% of smartphones, including those from Samsung, Google and LG.
“The current approach to addressing these vulnerabilities is disjointed at best,” Setu Kulkarni, vice president at cybersecurity firm WhiteHat Security, said in an email interview. Vendors, he added, “need to educate end users in layman’s terms about the impact these vulnerabilities have on them.”
According to reports, the Qualcomm vulnerability could allow hackers to remotely attack Android users by inserting malicious code into a phone's modem and launching programs.
