If you’re a little tired of reality, there’s no better time to delve into virtual reality. Thanks to Facebook, the company is heavily into virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality (VR, AR and MR respectively).
Facebook gives glimpse of the metaverse, the planned virtual reality world
The company held its annual Facebook Connect conference on Thursday, throwing down the gauntlet to all three types of digital reality. Mark Zuckerberg laid out his plans for the future, wrapped up in the umbrella of what he calls the “metaverse.” What is the metaverse? The Facebook CEO likened it to another world layered on top of the real one, calling it an “embodied internet.”
"Instead of looking at a screen, or looking at the internet like we do now, I think we're going to be more immersed in experiences in the future. I think that's just a qualitatively different experience," Zuckerberg said.
If you're looking for a gadget to illustrate its metaverse concept, the company also introduced Project Cambria. The high-end VR headset is set to launch next year and packs a ton of features that will set it apart from the company's current flagship headset, the Oculus Quest 2.
