The hours-long outages of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram on Monday were annoying, damaging to businesses and in some cases nearly catastrophic. According to Facebook, it was all due to configuration changes in the routers that coordinate the network.
That's a reasonable explanation, but the fact that a single mistake could bring down not only Facebook, but also other Facebook systems, is still troubling.
A single bad router configuration change caused multiple services, even VR headsets, to stop working altogether. What’s more, by Facebook’s own admission, it also had a domino effect on the way the company’s data centers communicate, bringing all of its services to a halt.
