Fallout 4’s most recent update, aimed at upgrading the game for next-gen platforms, has proven to be highly disruptive. Either by breaking modded games or the mods themselves, the update has angered many players. And what else to fix it than other mods, which were created exclusively to remove the update?

Just a day after the next-gen update launched, breaking all modded saves and their respective mods, players uploaded a new mod to the NexusMods platform aiming to remove the update and revert the game to its original state. It didn’t take long for the mod to catch on, and it now sits on the front page of NexusMods’ Fallout 4 section with nearly 20,000 downloads in three days.

In case you missed it, Bethesda decided to push out a “next-gen update” for Fallout 4 that totaled around 15GB, presumably to capitalize on the success of the Fallout TV series and the boost it gave the game. Despite its gigantic appearance, the mod didn’t change much, aside from affecting a few core technical issues, which of course led to the immediate freezing of numerous mods and saves running them. A popular soon-to-be-launched mod, Fallout: London, was also hampered by the update, which the mod’s devs said “screwed them.”

The Fallout 4 next-gen update, Patch 1.36, added several content packs, two new game modes (Quality and Performance), widescreen support, and a new verification for the Steam Deck. Bethesda claims that these changes significantly improve the game, which may be true for those running vanilla installs and nothing else. However, things look bleak for modders and mod enthusiasts, as mod developers look for ways to adapt to the new version of Fallout 4 (or rollback it altogether) and return their beautiful creations to the wasteland.
