VERIFY | SIM Swapping Is a Real Scam and the FCC Is Taking Strict Action
The FCC says it has received numerous complaints from people who have been affected and financially harmed by these scams. According to a press release, the agency wants carriers to use more secure authentication methods when a customer tries to move a phone number to a new device or carrier.
The FCC also wants carriers to immediately notify users when a SIM card is replaced or when a number port is requested for a customer's account.
In SIM swapping fraud, a malicious actor convinces a mobile carrier to transfer a victim’s phone service to a new device, giving the victim their personal information and other login credentials.
