The confidence of XDefiant’s diehard fanbase is beginning to waver. Concerns over the state of the game have continued to grow, with some unsure how Ubisoft’s critically acclaimed shooter can survive for more than 12 months.
XDefiant: Game Overview | In-Depth Trailer
Ubisoft isn't releasing concurrent player counts to prove a drop in interest in the title, but there are other signs, such as declining viewership on Twitch, as noted by community members on X (formerly Twitter) on July 29. The game launched in May with over 75,000 viewers across various streamers, according to TwitchTracker, but the drop in viewers has been steep, with just over 1,000 viewers, at the time of writing.
Twitch viewership isn’t exactly indicative of a game’s success, but there are other signs, such as Ubisoft’s own Community Challenge system. Ubisoft offers an additional weekly challenge for players as a whole to complete to earn extra in-game goodies, but over the past month the community has failed to meet the goals set by the devs. This week’s challenge appears to be no different; XDefiant players needed to reach 100 billion XP as a cohort, but had yet to reach a quarter of the goal with just two days left.
One of the XDefiant challenges required the playerbase to use skills to get kills, which, despite having such a high target set, didn't progress due to a bug. This, plus the constant stream of player complaints about long-running issues like netcode, as well as longer seek times (something executive producer Mark Rubin said the team was addressing), has many worried that XDefiant is headed for demise.
