Earlier this week, Final Fantasy XIV fans got the chance to download the Dawntrail benchmark, allowing them to see how well their rigs would handle the upcoming graphical update when the expansion launches. A character creator was also available, but fans were less than enthusiastic about the results.
FINAL FANTASY XIV: Campfire – A larger scale of adventure
Many players noted that the character creator's lighting and ambiance made their characters look lackluster. Multiple fans expressed their disappointment, so much so that a thread on the Final Fantasy XIV subreddit attempted to show players how to play around with the lighting for better results. The response has been so overwhelming that Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida took to the air regarding the issues and shared why they might look this way ahead of Dawntrail's June 28th release.
Yoshida shared his thoughts on the official Final Fantasy XIV blog, explaining why the character creator might not look that appealing to many players, especially with the new graphics coming. It all comes down to the fact that the character creator was created over a decade ago, back when Final Fantasy XIV was originally called A Realm Reborn. Yoshida pointed out that the character creator uses unique lightning not found anywhere else in the game, and that the backlighting used to display a character was a drawback in the graphical update.
While the characters received the graphical upgrade, the environment around them did not, and thus did not receive the same treatment. "We are currently expediting a rework of the environments and light sources from character creation for the actual game and the benchmark," Yoshida wrote. "Once that is complete, the current benchmark will be replaced."
