Fitbit has issued a voluntary recall of its Ionic smartwatches due to a potential fire hazard.
Fitbit recalls Ionic smartwatches after more than 100 reports of burns
An announcement from both Fitbit and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reveals a potential issue with Fitbit Ionic smartwatches. It appears that the lithium-ion battery inside the device may be overheating, potentially causing burns to users.
The CPSC stated that Fitbit has received over 174 reports (U.S. and internationally) of its Ionic smartwatches overheating, with 118 of those reports reporting users getting burned, meaning that approximately 67 percent of overheating incidents have resulted in physical injury. However, with approximately 1,693,000 Ionic watches sold worldwide and approximately 174 documented cases of overheating, the chance of injury is still quite low (0.01%).
Still, Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users do have the option for a refund. Both Fitbit and the CPSC recommend immediately stopping using your Ionic and starting the return process, even if you haven’t experienced any issues. Even if you haven’t used your Fitbit Ionic in a while (the devices were discontinued in 2020), you can still send it in, and Fitbit says you should.
