How to Fix the COM Surrogate Error
One of my customers had a strange problem when browsing photos and videos on his Windows 7 PC: he got the following error:
The strange thing was that the error only occurred when browsing video or photo files, and not with any other type of file. After some research we solved the problem, but we had to try a few more things before it finally worked. In this post I will write down the different possible solutions and hopefully one will work for you.
Since it was a video/picture issue, we thought it might have something to do with the current set of codecs. This customer liked to copy and rip stuff, so he had ffdshow installed plus a few other codecs. We manually updated all codecs to the latest versions, including ffdshow, Windows 7 Codec Pack and others. You can download the latest version of Windows 7 Codec Pack.
