If the device is unresponsive, the cursor behaves erratically or you cannot register certain gestures while using your laptop’s touchpad, incorrectly configured settings and outdated/corrupt drivers may be the reason. Similar issues can also occur with external touchpads.

Your laptop may have a special key that toggles the built-in touchpad on and off. This is usually assigned to a function key (such as F7 on Acer laptops), and you may have accidentally toggled it. Press it and see if you can then move the cursor.
