The clamshell laptop format hasn't changed in three decades. Maybe it's time for a shake-up with foldable laptops.
Laptop screen not good enough? Portable monitor can be the solution
But don’t laptops always fold, you might ask? And the answer, of course, is “yes.” Portable computers have featured a foldable clamshell design ever since Apple’s Powerbook 100 series in 1991. Asus’ new Zenbook Fold adds a bendable, foldable display to the mix. But is it just a bigger, more cumbersome version of a foldable phone, or a great way to add a giant screen to a laptop?
"I personally don't see myself buying a foldable anytime soon. If I want to use an iPad or a laptop, those devices work just fine," Daivat Dholakia, wearable tech enthusiast and VP of medical technology company Essenvia, told Lifewire via email. "I don't often crave more screen real estate while I can still fold it up. And if I want to watch TV, I just do that. I don't need a laptop with a bigger screen."
The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold wants to be everything. It’s a laptop. It’s a desktop with a separate Bluetooth keyboard. It’s a touchscreen tablet, and it weighs 1.8 kilograms, or just under four pounds.
