The holidays often cause even the smartest spenders to go over budget. Gift-giving, partying, traveling, eating out—it all adds up, especially on top of the regular monthly bills. If you’re worried about your finances this time of year, take a deep breath: There are specific things you can do to avoid overspending, no matter where you start.

Start by tracking your spending down to the last dollar. Download a budgeting app or use a spreadsheet. Just the act of having to enter and record where your money goes every day will make you more aware of bad habits. Analyze your recent data and look for those frequent small expenses for things you probably won’t even remember or care about next month.

Next, create your holiday gift list and divide people into must-have and nice-to-have categories. Must-haves should be immediate family members and very close friends that you feel obligated to. Nice-to-haves are those you want to buy gifts for, if possible. Be honest with yourself about priorities and expectations.

Set a hard limit on gift spending for each must-have person, say $50 or $75 max. If the endpoint limits are explicitly stated, it’s easier to say no to things in stores that overstep the mark. Set even lower thresholds for nice-to-have people, and only give gifts if you have extra money later.
