Everyone hates passwords, but Google users can now log in without them.
Understand Passwords in 4 Minutes
Google just enabled support for Passkeys, the more secure, convenient, and less annoying alternative to passwords. Passkeys let you log in to websites and services using biometrics instead of a password. If you use Google, you probably should. And the good news is, it takes less than a minute.
“[O]ur research proves that people are simply stuck on convenience when it comes to creating passwords. While it may sound funny that the most used password in the world in 2022 was the word ‘password,’ responsible businesses already understand that they can’t rely on passwords alone to protect their users from cyberattacks. They’re outdated and out of place in today’s internet environment, with all the cyber risks that come with it,” Sorin Manole, product strategist at password and security company NordPass, told Lifewire via email.
We have a great article explaining how passkeys work , but here’s the short version. When you use a password, both you and the service/site keep a copy, and when you log in, the site compares the two. As we know, this can go wrong in a number of ways. The password could be stolen from you or the site (sites are supposed to encrypt your password, but that doesn’t always help—or doesn’t always happen). You could be tricked into revealing it. Or you could choose a terrible password or use the same one everywhere.
