Fortnite’s latest season (and accompanying content update) is now live, and along with the usual additions to the roster and arsenal, it also brings some bad news for some Windows users.
Fortnite is ending support for Windows 7 and 8!
If you’ve been playing Fortnite on a Windows 7 or 8 PC, you may want to look into alternatives, as the latest season of the popular multiplayer game has dropped support for legacy OSes. This means the game will no longer run locally on your PC or receive official updates unless you’re running Windows 10 or later.
Epic Games first announced its plans in December 2022, stating that it would be better for the game itself (and most players) to focus its resources on current and future hardware. That, and to avoid the inherent security risks of running on operating systems that are themselves no longer officially supported. So if you’re currently playing on an older Windows machine, now is the time to consider upgrading your OS or finding another platform (of which there are many) to use instead. Epic Games recommends playing via GeForce Now if your Windows OS is no longer supported.
If you’re unaffected by the changes to the old control system (or plan to change it), Chapter 4 Season 2 brings a host of new characters, weapons, and locations. Famous anime protagonist Eren Yeager (from “Attack on Titan”) makes an appearance, but the overriding theme for this update is much more futuristic. MEGA City is the poster battleground, with rails to grind on and large buildings scattered across the map, though other new locations, like Steamy Springs and Drift Ridge, aren’t quite so cyberpunk.
