Fujifilm’s X100V launched in 2020 and was an instant hit. Small, extremely capable, and beyond cute, it was almost perfect. Now, with its upcoming sequel, the X100VI, it might even be perfect.
Fuji X100VI – Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Bought The Fujifilm X100VI
The current X100V is the latest in Fujifilm’s X100 series, a line of retro-styled fixed-lens cameras that let photographers control all key parameters – focus, aperture, shutter speed and ISO – with buttons and dials. Despite its many flaws, the original was an instant hit, a camera you could just use and not think about too much. The next iteration, the X100VI, is reportedly expected on February 20, 2024, and will add two features that mitigate some of the compromises: image stabilization and a larger 40-megapixel sensor.
"These are great additions to what is already a great line of cameras. I don't think any camera is necessarily perfect. There are always specific needs that vary from person to person. However, when it comes to all-around usability, these improvements will make this camera more perfect for a much wider range of people," pro photographer William Don told Lifewire via email.
Before we get into why in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and a 40MP sensor make such a difference, let's look at what makes the X100 series great, and what it's missing. As mentioned above, the X100 is both portable (we're talking a pocket here, not a pair of jeans) and capable. It also uses Fujifilm's Film Simulations, which produce beautiful JPGs straight out of camera, drawing on Fujifilm's decades of experience making both black-and-white and colour film.
