Gmail Exchange ActiveSync server settings access incoming messages and online folders in an Exchange email program. This is true whether the email client is on a phone, tablet, or other device. Once enabled, Gmail uses Microsoft Exchange technology and the ActiveSync protocol to form what is called Google Sync to keep your emails, calendar events, and contacts in sync between your online account and device.

If these server settings don't work for your personal Gmail account or free Google Apps account, it's because Google doesn't allow personal and free users to set up new accounts with Exchange ActiveSync. Only existing Google Sync EAS connections can use these settings. However, CardDAV allows similar access with IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV.
With ActiveSync, you can receive new email messages in real time, as well as calendar information, contacts, and tasks, provided your account has access to Exchange ActiveSync.
