Ever accidentally exited an app because you swiped back too many times? Such mishaps will soon be preventable on Android 14 with a predictive back gesture that shows the screen where you’re swiping back to as you do so. While predictive back isn’t enabled system-wide, it is live on Gmail for Android.
Predictive Back Animation is a hidden Android 14 feature to preview the navigation gesture
When you close an email in Gmail, you’ll see the predictive back gesture in action. As you swipe back, the email will shrink as if it’s detached from the main app screen, and you’ll see the transition animation that shows where you’re swiping back to.
Predictive back gesture was supposed to be an Android 14 feature from the start. But the fact that it’s not enabled system-wide could mean Google is lagging behind. Now that the feature is live on Gmail for Android version 2024.03.03.x, we can expect it to go live system-wide soon.
