The classic '90s first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 is returning on Nintendo Switch and Xbox.
What's so great about Goldeneye 007? – A dose of reality
These will actually be two different versions. The Switch version will be the original game, running through the Switch’s N64 Virtual Console. The Xbox version will be a “faithful recreation” in 4K, and will arguably look better. Either way, this is a true classic, and while game design has changed, there’s still no substitute for fun and great design. Or is there? Maybe GoldenEye 007 is just a specter built on nostalgia, and it just doesn’t hold up today.
"When I was growing up, GoldenEye 007 was definitely THE game you physically gathered your friends over to play," longtime GoldenEye fan and PR strategist Ken Ozeki told Lifewire via email. "For modern players, better graphics would definitely make a difference (as would playable characters from the Daniel Craig era of Bond films)—and perhaps more flexible and realistic body movements for the characters. Those Russian soldiers on the train definitely moved a little weird in N64 graphics."
GoldenEye 007 was a first-person shooting game released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. It had a few unique selling points. One of these was the use of the N64's analog control stick, which gave unprecedented control over aiming your weapons and allowed you to do so while on the run. You could also zoom in instantly when using a rifle with a scope. These are standard features in today's first-person shooters, but at the time they were new and exciting.
