Amazon is shutting down its cloud storage service Amazon Drive and is instead focusing on Amazon Photos.
Goodbye Brock, we barely knew you
If you use Amazon Drive to store your photos and videos, that won’t be the case for much longer. The company has confirmed that it will no longer support the cloud service and will shut it down entirely in 2023. But don’t worry about the media you’ve uploaded: it’ll all end up in Amazon Photos instead.
This won’t happen right away, though. First, the Amazon Drive apps will be removed from the Android and iOS app stores to prevent anyone from launching the service when it’s about to go away. Sometime after that, uploads to the service will stop, though your ability to view and download files that were previously uploaded won’t be affected. Finally, the service will shut down entirely and be replaced by Amazon Photos.
According to Amazon, Drive users don't need to do much to prepare for the change. Photos and videos stored on Amazon Drive have reportedly already been copied over to Amazon Photos, and all you need to do is start using that service. Other types of files (such as documents or incompatible media formats) won't be moved, however. So if you have something that can't be transferred to Photos, you'll need to download and save it elsewhere before the service shuts down.
