In the latest beta version of its Chrome browser for iPhone, Google has added an option to position the search bar directly above the keyboard, a “bottom bar” instead of the previously standard top bar. It’s an immediately welcome addition that also highlights the slow pace of web browser innovation.

"I actually prefer the bottom [search bar]. Not only is it easier to reach with one hand, but it's also really convenient to be able to switch between tabs using the same gestures I normally use to switch between programs," Daniel Florido, president of web design and advertising firm Pixelstorm, told Lifewire via email.

A bottom bar has one big advantage: it’s much easier to reach with your thumb when you’re typing on your phone, with one or two hands. It’s also easier to read what you’re typing, because you don’t have to look from the keyboard to the top of the screen and back again.
