Starting in September, some links to Google Drive may no longer be accessible if you do not opt in to the new security improvements.
GDrive Security Update | How Does It Affect Your Files?
According to a Google blog post published on Wednesday, a new security update will apply to some Google Drive files to make sharing links more secure. Google recommends that all users apply the update, but ultimately leaves the choice of what to do with the affected files up to you.
Google said it would send email notifications next month to both organizations and people with personal Google Workspace accounts to let them know which files would be affected. Users have until Sept. 13 to decide how the update applies to their specific files.
“Once the update is applied to a file, users who have not previously viewed the file will need to use a URL that contains the resource key to access it, and those who have previously viewed the file or have direct access will not need the resource key to open the file,” Google wrote in its blog post.
