Measure, Google's augmented reality-based measurement application, is the latest victim in the company's history of killing apps.
Meet app for Android better than iPhone
It’s not uncommon for companies of Google’s size to cancel apps and features, especially as the technology continues to evolve. The latest app to go under is Measure, an AR-based app that Google originally released in 2016 as part of its Tango AR platform. Android Police was first to report Measure’s demise, reporting that the app will no longer be available on the Play Store . Android Police also reports that users who already have the app will see a message in the app stating that support has ended.
Despite its 2016 launch, Measure has had some shaky experiences over the past few years. In 2018, Google killed Tango, leaving Measure as a standalone app on any device that used ARCore, the company’s primary AR development kit. Vertical measurements were also added to the app that same year, though development appeared to slow down shortly thereafter.
The idea behind Measure was simple. Users could use their camera to point at various items and measure them by drawing lines on the screen. Unfortunately, Measure wasn’t the most accurate measurement system ever, which led to poor reviews on the Google Play Store.
