Google’s removal of third-party cookies isn’t the death of targeted advertising. According to experts, the company is simply changing the way the game is played.
Google's #1 Worst Privacy Setting (Change It Now!)
Google announced plans to remove support for third-party cookies from its Chrome browser by the end of 2019. While other browsers already offered ways to block cookies, Chrome's removal is a huge deal because of how entrenched Google is in the world of technology as a whole. Now, Google has provided an update on its move, including details about its Privacy Sandbox, which will effectively replace the way the company tracks your online data and shares it with advertisers.
"Google's solution is to remove tracking cookies and replace them with a more anonymous, interest-based approach," Paul Bischoff, a privacy advocate at Comparitech, told Lifewire via email. "That said, Google can track you in various ways across all of its services. It still records your searches, location, and YouTube viewing history, for example."
If you've been online in the last few years, chances are you've come across a pop-up message on a website talking about the use of "cookies" to improve your experience.
