Google Maps is one of those apps that gets regular updates, and with the recent announcement, the company plans to make your location history more accessible through a feature called Timeline. As the name suggests, Timeline remembers all the places you’ve been in the past and is powered by the existing Location History functionality.
Google Maps Timeline – Discover and manage your location history
Location History is turned off by default for all Google accounts, but users who have opted to enable it will soon see a Timeline section in the Google Maps app on their iPhone. The main change here is that the places you've been will be stored locally on your phone instead of in the cloud.
This way, if you use Google Maps on multiple devices, your visits and routes will be saved separately on each of your devices, giving you more control over your location history. You will still have the option to back up your location data to the cloud if you want to access your location history from different devices.
Timeline settings can be accessed by tapping the blue dot icon that shows your current location on the map. Google says the new blue dot controls will be rolling out to both Android and iOS versions of the Google Maps app in the coming weeks.
