It’s the 15th anniversary of Google Street View, and to celebrate, the mobile Maps app is getting a time capsule feature of sorts.
Cameras that are suitable for Google Street View
The new feature, available on Android and iOS, lets you view images taken in Street View as far back as 2007, the year the service launched. Google also unveiled a new Street View camera that's lighter than previous models, and new photo collections of famous places around the world.
To use this feature, you must first tap on the image to view the location data. You can then use the 'View more dates' option to view archived images from that location.
Street View was first available in New York City, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver, with Los Angeles following shortly thereafter. These cities have imagery going back to 2007, but for other locations, the oldest archived imagery depends on when Google first took the photo in that area.
