When the world was still in lockdown and the easiest way to see the people you care about was through video calls, Google launched Project Starline to make those conversations feel more natural. On Monday, the company announced it was one step closer to making that goal a reality.

Before the announcement, Project Starline testing was only available within Google offices. Now, the company is partnering with HP, given its “computing expertise,” to develop a commercialized version of the technology for release sometime in 2025.
The video conferencing system is a complicated mix of technology, AI and software that “feels like looking through a ‘Magic Window,’” according to Google. You’ll be able to gesture and make eye contact with the person on the other end of the line, and while it’s not specifically mentioned, it seems there may even be AI capabilities that can match backgrounds of the call to make it feel even more like you’re in the same room as the other person.
Details about what form and capabilities the technology might take are scarce. However, Google’s announcement made clear that the company plans to eventually make the technology work with Zoom and Google Meet.
