The answer to the clue "Grains you'd rather not eat?" in the October 14 NYT Mini Crossword puzzle is "SAND." Although grains are usually processed into food, you don't want to eat sand as a snack, despite what a toddler might tell you.
Although my first thought was food, the fact that it specified something you wouldn't want to eat was a huge giveaway. Since it was only a four-letter word, I figured out the solution quickly, so I'm giving this clue a two out of five difficulty.
